When you hear the word Samsung what comes to mind? Do you think about televisions, smartphones, home appliances, laptops, and/or etc.? Samsung is that and much more! The company Samsung works for education, for defense, and even aerospace.
The Beginnings of Samsung
In 1938, Lee Byung-chul, in the Gyeongsang province, created an export company and called it Samsung (which means three stars in Korean). At first, the company was mainly engaged in export trade, particularly to the sale of dried Korean fish, vegetables and fruit to Manchuria and Beijing. However, in just over a decade, Samsung would have its own flour mills, manufacture its own machines and have its own manufacturing facilities and sales, to finally become the modern global corporation that it is today.
Lee Byung-chul was born into a wealthy family that sent him to the Waseda University in Tokyo, but he did not finish his studies, and after the unexpected death of his father, he used part of her inheritance to open a rice plant in his hometown. The rice plant did not give him a lot of money at first, so in 1938, he opened a company trucking in Daegu, which he called the Samsung Trading and had the initial three-star Samsung in its logo. This was the cornerstone of the empire. This company was able flourish despite deep problems between the relations of Japan and Korea.
In 1953, Lee Byung-chul founded Cheil Sugar (now called CJ Cheil Jedal). It's an industry dedicated to food that gave Byung enough money to continue founding companies that sold products in a variety of sectors, from textiles, automotive and, of course, the consumer electronics. In 1961, General Park took control of the company, and Byung stayed in Japan and never returned to South Korea.
In this period, he founded and bought companies of all kinds, from the insurance Ankuk Fire & Marine Insurance (1958), which was renamed Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance in October 1993, to the founding of Joong-Ang Development which was renamed Samsung Everland.
Above all of this, Samsung is dedicated to consumer electronics products. This is an area in which the company has deepened enough to become the leader it is today.
Samsung's growing interest in technology led to the creation of two research institutes and development (R & D) company, which contributed to further expand its scope in the fields of electronics, semiconductors, chemical products based high polymers, genetic engineering, telecommunications systems fiber optics and aerospace engineering, as well as in new fields of technology innovation from nanotechnology to advanced network architectures.
In 1987, after the death of the founding chairman of Samsung, his son Lee Kun-Hee succeeded him as president. During this period, Samsung challenged to restructure their old activities and enter new sectors, with the aim of becoming one of the five most important companies in the world.
It was in 1992, when Samsung begin to develop the first mobile phone system that would become the first smartphone in 1999. Legend has it that it was intended that these phones would be launched in 1995, but that did not work as it should have. When Lee Kun-Hee found the fault that occurred in their factories in China, he opted to have all the inventory destroyed. However, all of that changed. Today, Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets are of the best products in the market. They are known for its superior quality in screens and cameras. The Samsung price range for smartphone and tablets are similar to its main competitor, Apple iPhones.
Nowadays, Samsung dominates the mobile phone market with their Galaxy smartphones, and its commitment to the Android range. They have put their horizon in changing technological mentality to inspire the world in order to create the future. Samsung Malaysia is one of the most popular electronics brands here in Malaysia and all over the world.
